Energy Storage Project Land Solutions

May 27, 2024

Recently there has been a surge in the development of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in the United States. This new technology consists of groups of battery banks connected to the electrical grid that receive and store electricity when demand is low so that the electricity can be dispatched later when demand is high.

Similar to solar and wind farms, the BESS projects require a certain type of land with specific characteristics. In this case, desirable land includes flat land with access to maintenance/access roads which isn’t prone to flooding risks immediately adjacent to an existing electrical substation and away from areas containing wetlands or endangered species habitats.

In comparison to other renewable energy projects energy storage requires much less property. BESS installments can be constructed on sites as small as 2-3 acres with 10-20 acres being an average size range that developers look to lease. Unfortunately, since the amount of land required is relatively small, the idea of entering a long-term lease can be less attractive for many property owners.

Madison Street Energy has a solution for both landowners and developers when the perfect BESS location is identified but a lease is not the best option for the landowner.  We work with landowners and developers to provide lump sum offers for either a lease buyout (landowner retains all rights and ownership to the property) or to purchase the parcel(s) outright and then immediately enter a long-term lease with the project developer.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can assist both landowners and developers in this valuable new dimension of renewable energy.
